The article discusses issues of teachers’ professional development. Specific characteristics of a teacher’s profession are analyzed and stages of professional (career) development are identified. Professional criteria, characteristics of professional maturity are defined. A category “professional development”, a term “professional age”, methods of planning and implementation of pedagogical actions are discussed. The authors develop a matrix of teacher’s professionalism, which includes the majority of tasks solved by a teacher within his/her pedagogical career. Special programmes for different groups of teachers are presented briefly.
